The Rise of Mersoon Rising

I completed writing Mersoon Rising long before our mixed race president ran for office and before I’d even heard his name. It was quite a coincidence this book presents a System Alliance Overseer election caught in an uproar about a candidate who is a half DOE  (Descendant of Earth) and half alien human. The election progresses and uncovers a political system brimming with extortion, deceptions and rebellion. At the same time, Mersoon’s constant conflicts ebb and flow and personal relationships sizzle along the sidelines.

I nearly decided not to send this book out for publication. Then on the off chance I might get some feedback, I sent an excerpt to a well-established author for his opinion. He encouraged me by saying simply; it appeared very publishable and later that it was “feisty” text. I made sure to recognize him on the acknowledgment page of Mersoon Rising.

From a review of the galley

In a review, Entertainment Editor Amber Bogins of Michigan Chronicle says, “Without a doubt, Shirley G. Coleman’s debut novel will keep you consistently turning through the 700+ pages anxious to find out what happens next in this strange universe with alien characters and drives and emotions that are familiar and human.” (June 17, 2013). Thank you, Amber!

Mersoon Rising now appears on Amazon. Wow, it’s like a little planet in an infinite  galaxy!

Heroes and Villains

Recalling my favorite books, I've discovered a disturbing thing about myself but I'm just about certain, I'm not alone. For me,  great villains make a great read.  While writing I often struggle with inventing flawed heroes--wanting them to be at once likable yet ruthless. Or I wrestle with villains that are not all bad; who present a bit of humanity and reason along the way. These guys are fun to create and get to know. There's no shortage of flawed heroes and remarkable villains in Mersoon Rising. Some of my all-time favorite villains and flawed heroes appear in: Sardonyx Net by Elizabeth Lynn (Only book of a few I've reread); a series starting with An Exchange of Hostages by Susan R. Matthews; Summer Queen by Joan Vinge; James Lee Burke's books set in, LA; and the Gap Series by Stephen R. Donaldson.

Planet Mersoon

During Mersoon Rising, visitors to Mersoon arrive at a space port on the east coast of the single continent. DOEs constructed the space port after they settled on the planet centuries before the period in the book. DOEs—Descendants of Earth—had hoped to colonize a small uninhabited planet in the early stages of formation. Millions of islands filling Mersoon's Ocean formed then disappeared as oceanic volcanoes and deep "rivers" gradually reformed the very core of Mersoon. But DOEs had encountered inhabitants so near to Earth humans, many began to believe either planet seeding was not just a theory, or that God's creation expanded far beyond the heavens and the Earth. Whether God's creation or something else, the descendants and Mersoons soon discover they have many things in common.Get Mersoon Rising here:
